Cataract Surgery

A cataract develops when the eye's natural lens becomes cloudy and usually occurs during the normal aging process of the eye.  While most people will not become aware of the effects of their cataract until after the age of 60, some will begin to notice the changes as early as age 40 including:

  • A slow decline in vision

  • Difficulty seeing in dim light and night driving

  • Glare or halos around lights

  • Struggles with small print on the television and road signs

  • The constant feeling that their glasses are dirty

There is no known treatment to prevent or cure cataracts at this time other than surgery.  During this procedure your surgeon can replace the eye's natural lens, which became a cataract, with a man made intraocular lens implant.  There are several types of lens implants to choose from:

  • Monofocal lenses

  • Toric lenses

  • Multifocal lenses

There is no single lens that works best for all patients and a detailed discussion with your surgeon can help you choose the lens that is most likely to meet your visual needs and goals.
