Ocular Surface

Management

Ocular surface disease, also known as dry eyes, is a chronic condition.  There are a host of treatments available to ease a patient's suffering; however, there is rarely a means to cure the disease completely.  Patients with dry eyes will often experience:

  • Blurry vision

  • Burning, irritated, gritty or scratchy eyes

  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

  • Excessive paradoxical tearing or watery eyes

Symptoms are often made worse with reading or extended screen time.  In its most advanced stage, dry eye disease can damage the surface of the eye resulting in a decline in vision.

In addition to improving a patient's comfort and visual clarity on a day to day basis, it is also important to stabilize the surface of the eye before undergoing cataract surgery to improve the visual outcome.  After surgery the tear film must be maintained to optimize results.
